A momentous decision today… stop. Well, just for one day. Stay in the one place (Saumur) for another 24 hours and explore a bit without the bikes. The beautiful B&B we are in helped make the decision easier.
So, on to the local bus and off to visit the local cave dwellers of Turquant who have lived in the limestone caves here for centuries, gradually adding a little comfort and class to their rocky abodes over the generations. Most of the stone used to make the grand chateaux was mined from their caves, so why not take advantage of the convenient holes left in the cliffs!Next a visit to the local abbey, Fontevraud, which just happens to be the burial place for Richard the Lion Heart, king of England no less- not to mention being a former prison where French author Jean Genet wrote “Miracle of the Rose” whilst he was an inmate. (Must read that when I get home!)
