Nice Work…

Not content with our big day on the cycles we decided to brave the lights of Times Square for a Broadway show. We found the discount ticket office under the red steps in Times Square and snared half-price seats to “Nice Work If You Can Get It” with 25 minutes to find the theatre and settle in before the show. For such a late purchase the seats were pretty good, near the front of the mezzanine. The show was pretty good too, a light hearted romp through some of the best Gershwin tunes with a terrific cast, including Ferris Bueller himself, Matthew Broderick… not bad for half price!
During intermission I was reading the Playbill for the show (at Broadway shows, apparently, you get a free program with all of the cast and crew details- take note Australian theatre!) and an ad for the famous Jazz club Birdland grabbed my attention. It was really close, we hadn’t eaten yet and Jan loves jazz… so at the end of “Nice Work” we wandered off for dinner and, joy of joys, because we had theatre tickets we got half off the cover charge… this was turning into one of the great travel days!
The dinner was great, the venue was classic jazz club with a tiered semi-circle of tables around the intimate stage, the audience were dressed to impress (we were glad we decided to tidy up a bit after our bike ride!) and the 11pm show began just as our drinks and meal arrived. We hadn’t heard of Cyrille Aimee before but she put on a great show to cap off a classic day in New York. So much fun!
