The day after Thanksgiving in the U.S. is known as “Black Friday” the day of the BIG pre-Christmas sales, kind of like our Boxing Day sales on steroids (and early enough that you get to give your presents and not have them appear in the shops at half-price the next day!) Anyway, Jan & I would not normally go near a shop on a big sale day but, hey, when in Rome…
So we boarded the subway and headed downtown to sales central: Macy’s. Not only is it “the biggest store in the world” but also the destination for half of the population of Manhattan. Why we were there I don’t know, but it was a lot of fun- in a masochistic sort of way. Jan even got her make-up done… no sale prices for cosmetics meant that it was the only part of the whole store where you could actually find some respite! I was even forced to seek refuge in the Times Square Mc Donald’s!
Other highlights from the day: inside the Chrysler building foyer, Bryant Park and an evening visit to the Museum of Modern Art where Jan’s favourite painting, Munch’s “The Scream” happened to be on loan.
