New Yorkers would be very familiar with the statue of Christopher Columbus which stands about 15 metres above Columbus Circle, just near the southern end of Central Park. We hadn’t seen it, however, despite walking by the very spot on our way to the park or subway nearly every day. Why? Well, Japanese artist Tatzu Nishi somehow persuaded the authorities to let him build a mighty scaffold around the statue and then enclose ol’ Chris in a lounge room. Yep, a lounge room: couch, TV, windows, the lot!
When we finally figured out what was going on we got hold of a free ticket and climbed the eight flights of stairs to have a look. Brilliant!
