Jan and Ian

Harlem (and Argentina)…

Sunday in New York and another subway trip; this time north of Central Park, to Harlem. We hoped to go to the famous Abyssinian Gospel Church’s Sunday service but the strict line up rules revealed that backpacks were not permitted (along with women wearing tights and a few other scandalous practices) so we wandered the main and back streets instead. Unfortunately there wasn’t a show at the Apollo Theatre whilst we were in New York so we had to find some other entertainment for the afternoon.
After working up an appetite we lunched on some soul food before heading back to the subway and downtown again to Times Square. The TKTS booth had half price “Evita” tickets and as neither Jan nor I had seen it we grabbed them and made it to the matinee with a few minutes to spare. We expected our last minute purchase to have us tucked away in a corner somewhere up the back. Nope. Third row, dead centre. Seriously. Amazing. The show was good too. Ricky Martin, managing to get through over two hours on stage without even singing “Living la Vida Loca” once, was very good as Che.
Our fourteen-block walk home lead us to another New York gem, a great Thai restaurant a block from the apartment- the perfect end to a great Sunday.
