Jan and Ian

So different…

I can’t believe how different it is traveling with Meg and Charles.

Usually our typical day of overseas exploration would go something like:
Start early, walk for hours, find quirky little cafés and restaurants (must be filled with locals), try to get off the beaten track whenever possible, listen to the locals tell us their stories and explain their home through their eyes, differ over maps and directions, strictly avoid Mc Donald’s, Starbucks and other omnipresent multinational food outlets, walk for a few more hours, get tired of walking and concede that it would be a good idea to use local public transport, try to decipher the intricacies of local public transport, get back to our accommodation exhausted, thrilled with our day’s efforts and try to get enough sleep so we can do it all again tomorrow.

But now, grandchildren in tow, it couldn’t be more different- for now we:
Start early, walk for hours, find quirky little cafés and restaurants (must be filled with locals), try to get off the beaten track whenever possible, listen to the locals tell us their stories and explain their home through their eyes, differ over maps and directions, stop by at Mc Donald’s, Starbucks and other omnipresent multinational food outlets, walk for a few more hours, get tired of walking and concede that it would be a good idea to use local public transport, try to decipher the intricacies of local public transport, get back to our accommodation exhausted, thrilled with our day’s efforts and try to get enough sleep so we can do it all again tomorrow.

Could NOT be more different. Extraordinary how a couple of teenagers can totally change everything.

But we loved every minute of it! M & C were like born travellers. They met every challenge with a smile and a can-do attitude, and they blew us away with how they immersed themselves in their new environment. Awesome!

Oh, and they even joined in the bickering about maps and directions 😊
